The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has recently issued new rules for public land users in the Salida and Howard areas.
The rules, which came about after two years of extensive public input, affect the Arkansas River Travel Management Plan area and take affect March 15, according to a BLM spokesperson. The plan allows for designated uses and travel routes, intended to protect natural resources. According to the BLM, the new rules, for example, limit mountain bikers to designated routes. Also, recreational target shooting is prohibited on all public lands within the Methodist Mountain Area south of Salida, as well as the Turkey Rock area near Howard. Those areas are identified as closed to recreational target shooting on their map, as well as by posted signage.
In addition, operation of a motorized vehicle in the Turkey Rock Trails area is limited to trail-riding motorcycles and is prohibited before sunrise and after sunset. In the coming months, BLM workers will begin posting signs throughout the affected areas to reflect the new rules.
